WASHINGTON - Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., has introduced legislation that would require the secretary of the treasury to mint coins commemorating the 100th anniversary of Mother's Day. Proceeds from the keepsake coins would go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
The Mother's Day Centennial Commemorative Coin Act would honor Anna Jarvis, who first requested a Mother's Day celebration in her hometown, Grafton, W.Va., in 1908. West Virginia was the first state to recognize her efforts and established Mother's Day in 1910.
"What started out as a simple act on the streets of Grafton is now celebrated in every community across the nation and quite a few countries around the globe," Rockefeller said.
