Known as the "fastest sport on two feet," lacrosse is becoming increasingly popular among area teens. The latest addition to the local youth lacrosse circuit is the newly formed George Washington High School girls team.
Though the school's first lacrosse team was started last year, the team was open only to males. The establishment of this team immediately resulted in many female students' interest in the fast-paced sport. With the support of many potential players and two faculty sponsors, the girls' team, a club sport, was recently created for the upcoming spring season.
Kate Schessler, a sophomore player, was instrumental in the creation of the team. "I helped get the sponsors and got the information out, and a lot of girls showed up ready to play."
The rules of girls' lacrosse differ significantly from boys', most notably in regards to equipment and the allowed level of physical contact. Women's lacrosse does not promote a lot of physical contact, and the only protective equipment worn is a mouth guard, eye guard, and sometimes gloves.
Though only two of the team's 20 or so members have played lacrosse before, all are ready for the challenges that lie ahead. Coached by Missy Burdette, a three-year lacrosse player, the team's official practices began March 2 and will continue four days a week throughout the season.
Junior Jahana Wazir said the practices have been going very well. "We're all working really hard."
She said that though practices are difficult right now, she can't wait for their efforts to pay off during the games.
Sophomore Alexis Monteleone agreed. "We're practicing and conditioning a lot, and I'm sure it's going to be worth it."
The George Washington girls lacrosse team opened its season on March 21 in Buckhannon with games against Buckhannon-Upshur and Wheeling Park. Other opponents this season include Fairmont, University and Morgantown high schools.
