Disney delivers 'Pure' excitement
Review: 'Pure'

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- In the real world, the closest I've ever come to nailing a sick trick on an ATV was the time I inadvertently put my bike into reverse and backed into the family pickup truck when I was a teenager. Now thanks to Disney Interactive's "Pure," I can pull off insane jumps and stunts without the fear of getting yelled at by my Dad.

"Pure" is an offroad quad racer that seamlessly blends over-the-top tricks with a solid racing engine to create one of the most enjoyable racing games in recent years. Developer Black Rock Studios, the people behind the "ATV Offroad" franchise, clearly created "Pure" with one thing in mind -- fun. While games like "MX vs. ATV" have become more sim, "Pure" embraces the arcade side of the genre.

The controls are easy to pick up and executing stunts is as simple as hitting one of the face buttons and pushing a direction on the left analog stick. There are no complicated combos to memorize here, which adds to the game's accessibility. You'll begin with only a few basic tricks at your disposal, but as you progress you'll unlock more extreme moves to add to your repetoire.

Basic tricks can be pulled off on just about any jump you encounter, but for special tricks you'll need to launch your bike off one of the many vertigo-inducing vertical drop jumps found on each of the game's 30 tracks. These jumps are unlike anything you've ever experienced in a racing game, and the thrill of falling hundreds of feet while doing backflips off the seat of an ATV never gets old.

Speaking of tracks, each are well thought-out with multiple paths to choose in order to complete a lap. The tracks are based on seven real-world locations ranging from Italy to Wyoming, with each offering different challenges to test your racing mettle. Visually the tracks, like everything else in the game, are a treat. The bikes, riders and environments look as good as any you'll find in any racing game -- offroad or otherwise.

Of the primary game modes available, you'll probably spend the majority of your time in the World Tour. Here, you pick your rider, set up your bike and race your way through nearly a dozen stages. As you do well, you'll unlock more parts for your ATV and different outfits for your character. You can also take part in single exhibition races, time trials and freestyle runs that feature power ups scattered across the track to help boost your score.

If you get tired of the single-player fun (and I don't know if that's even possible), "Pure" offers 16-player online racing in all three of the aforementioned modes, along with a cool Freeride mode. My experience with the online play over Xbox Live was buttery smooth without sacrificing anything visually.

If you've been searching for a great offroad racing game, look no further than "Pure." It's the most fun you can have on four wheels, at least with a controller in your hands.
