Book reprinted, dramatized
CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- "The Last Forest: Tales of the Allegheny Woods" by West Virginia writer G.D. McNeill has been reprinted by the Pocahontas Communications Cooperative.
The historical novel reprinting coincides with the November broadcast on West Virginia Public Radio of five stories from the book. Larry Groce and Michael Frasher produced the radio plays from the original stories.
Stories in "The Last Forest" begin in the forests of McNeill's boyhood in the 1890s. The heavy logging of the forest and the devastating forest fires are also recounted.
The book was first published in 1940 and is now in its fourth printing. The book can be ordered online at www.alleghenymountainradio.org for $18. A three-audio CD set is $20, and a package of the book and CDs is $30. A curriculum guide is free to educators.
The radio plays will be broadcast at 9 p.m. Nov. 5, 12 and 19.
Tamarack book signing
BECKLEY, W.Va. -- Thurman Miller of Mount Hope will sign copies of his latest book, "Always Faithful, Always Free," from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 7 in the main concourse at Tamarack.
Miller fought with the 1st Marine Division in World War II on Guadalcanal and elsewhere in the South Pacific.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Young children can improve their reading skills by reading to therapy dogs in sessions at the Kanawha County Main Library on Capitol Street.
An introductory session is at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 5. Individual reading sessions are from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5, 12, 19 and Dec. 3. Patrons are required to sign up for a four-week reservation to read to the dogs.

Smithers book signing
SMITHERS, W.Va. -- Dwight Harshbarger will sign copies of his new book, "Witness at Hawks Nest," from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Christian Family Book Shoppe in Smithers.
He will give a video presentation of photographs of the construction of the Hawks Nest tunnel, during which it is believed more than 700 workers died from undiagnosed silicosis.
Harshbarger is an adjunct professor of community medicine at the West Virginia University School of Medicine.
