'RFC' debuts new, longer format

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- "Radio Free Charleston" Episode 189 is online now at the PopCult blog.

With this episode, the show is stretching its format to include more new music. Longer shows will alternate with short "mini-shows" that will run 10 minutes or less. It's all part of a plan by show producer and host Rudy Panucci to delay Radio Free Charleston's 200th episode until February so he can arrange for a very special milestone.

This week's musical guests are Motion Theatre, Zeroking and Snakebox -- all three bands making their "RFC" debut -- plus returning favorite The Diablo Blues Band.

Beckley's Motion Theatre was recorded unplugged at The Empty Glass a few months ago, performing "Devils." Veteran metal band Zeroking was recorded live performing "So Damn Beautiful" at the ECMC Kick Cancer benefit at The Eagles Club on Charleston's West Side.

Snakebox was recorded at The Empty Glass just last week. The band, which has a rotating line-up, only featured four members for this recording of its song "Super Baby."

The Diablo Blues Band recently returned to the stage at The Blue Parrot with a slightly new line-up. Its new tune, "One For Magoo," is an epic tearjerker, and the recording here is the first live performance of it. "RFC" brings you this version despite a couple of audio glitches, but promises to revisit it in a future episode. The song is that good.

The show kicks off with a look at ShockaCon, the sci-fi/horror/fantasy convention coming to Charleston's East End in September. It also includes a look at The Alban Arts Center production of "The Wind in the Willows" and new animation by Frank Panucci.
