Drum corps live film

See the world's most elite marching music ensembles in "DCI 2013: Big, Loud & Live 10" beginning at 6:30 p.m. today at Nitro Stadium 12. The five-hour-15-minute event broadcasts the Drum Corps International World Championship Prelims live from Indianapolis.

Brew Skies Festival

The 2013 Brew Skies Festival at Canaan Valley State Park runs from 3 p.m. to midnight Friday and from 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday. It features 28 bands on two stages, all of whom are West Virginia-based or have ties to the state, except the headliners: J. Roddy Walston and The Business, Luella and The Sun, The Pimps of Joytime and Grayson Capps.

There will be craft beer sales from state breweries, plus local artisan booths and a children's area. Tickets are $50 for the weekend or $30 daily. Admission is free for ages 14 and under.

'Chicago'

The Charleston Light Opera Guild will close its production of "Chicago" at the Civic Center Little Theater this weekend. Remaining performances are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $20 for the show, which Gazette reviewer Andrea Bond said is "a real killer -- every bit as fun as the shootings and stabbings gleefully carried out by the showgirls in the musical."

Children's Theatre auditions

Children's Theatre of Charleston will conduct auditions for its production of "Seussical The Musical Jr." from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the CTOC workshop, 1007 Bigley Ave. Roles are available for boys and girls ages 8 to 18.

You may register for an audition slot at www.ctoc.org, but it is not required. Registrants should come 20 minutes early, to complete registration and prepare for a small dance routine.

Performance dates are Oct. 10-13.

Reggae festival

The Pretty Penny Café in Hillsboro will host its second annual Reggae SunFest beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday. Performers at the family-friendly event are Lazy Man Dub, the Shawn Owen Band, I-Vibes and DJ Charlan.

UUC concert

Jim Scott will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 520 Kanawha Blvd. W. The singer/composer/guitarist/activist will perform a concert of his jazz and world music-influenced songs, which celebrate peace, justice and the earth.

No Pants Players

The No Pants Players will present two shows in one Saturday at Timothy's Bar, 1022 Quarrier St. (below the Quarrier Diner). Beginning at 9 p.m., half the improv comedy troupe will perform; then, after a 30-minute intermission, it's the rest of the troupe's turn.

The show is for ages 18 and up only. Expect adult themes, situations and language.

Mt. Nebo open mic

At 8 p.m. Aug. 14, BiggDaddy & the Mudcats will begin hosting a weekly open mic night at the Tractor Bar, 546 Wilderness Highway, Mt. Nebo. It's free, and has a full electric backline provided, with stage, lights, drums and amps.

Line dance workshop

Youngstown, Ohio, line dance instructor Jill Babinec will teach a daylong workshop Aug. 17 at the Elk's Lodge, 1706 Greenbrier St. Babinec DJs at line dance events all over the country and is up to date on all current line dances.

Registration runs from 9 to 9:30 a.m., with the morning session from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. After a one-hour break for lunch (included in registration fee), the afternoon session is from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Come back from 7 to 11 p.m. for a dance DJed by Babinec.

Alban Arts Academy

The Alban Arts Academy is now enrolling for the fall 2013 semester, which begins Aug. 27. Classes include acting, improv, stage makeup, screenwriting, digital storytelling, directing, technical theatre and scene painting.

Tuition is $200 per class for a 12-week semester. Scholarships are available.

WomanSong fundraiser
