YWCA looking for vintage art again

P.K. Khoury is looking for a few good pieces of art.

She has some, but she needs more for "Vintage 2," the YWCA's silent auction of high-quality art that people are willing to part with.

Artist Susan Poffenbarger has already donated two large pastel paintings, including one very large lush landscape that had been at The Art Store until now. "I wanted to donate something significant," Poffenbarger said.

Landscape painter Kemp McElwee has donated four paintings, all part of her Colombian Series.

Watercolorist Betty Warner has donated two small watercolor portraits of Chinese children from her travels abroad.

Poffenbarger and McElwee have again agreed to help find donations from either artists wanting to clean out their studios or collectors wanting to part with pieces they no longer have room for or no longer cherish.

"We talk it up among our art friends," Poffenbarger said. "Some have said they couldn't do it this year, but that doesn't mean someone else might not donate a piece."

The inaugural event raised $21,000 for the YWCA last year, when 150 people came to the Y to bid on 120 pieces, said Khoury, the Y marketing director. A Poffenbarger pastel landscape fetched the top price, $2,100.

"Vintage II" will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 5 at the Y, 1114 Quarrier St. Proceeds will go to the Y's endowment campaign, which has raised $1.03 million toward a goal of $2 million by yearend 2009. The Lyell and Priscilla Clay Foundation has promised a $2 million challenge grant, half now committed, the other half to be committed when the Y raises its second million.

"This campaign is important to the YWCA's future, as we see grants and government funding cut each year, " said Rachelle Beckner, the Y's development director. "We'll use the income to keep providing the services we provide to 4,500 people a year."

In addition to paintings, the Y will accept signed limited-edition prints and, new this year, sculpture, pottery and unframed paintings, Beckner said. All pieces will have a minimum bid. Pieces that do not sell at the auction will go to the Y's Second Seating furniture store, where they will bring in some cash for the Y.

Admission will be $25 to this wine and hors d'oeuvres cheese event. Artwork for the auction may be dropped off by May 23 at the Y's administrative offices, 1114 Quarrier St. Call Beckner at 414-3113.
